Nature study: smartwatch AI matches office BP for spotting hypertension signs

Google Research authors report cuffless PPG+accelerometry AI on a consumer watch with 65.8% sensitivity and 90.0% specificity versus 24-hour ambulatory BP in 196 adults; Nature, 5 Nov 2026.

Why it matters

A prospective multicentre Nature paper from Google Research validates an opportunistic hypertension detector that reads photoplethysmography and accelerometry on a consumer smartwatch without cuff calibration. Against gold-standard 24-hour ambulatory BP in 196 adults without known cardiovascular disease or antihypertensives, sensitivity was 65.8% and specificity 90.0%, with PPV 80.6%—comparable to initial office BP screening in the same cohort. The authors position the tool as a prompt toward confirmatory cuff diagnosis, not a replacement. It is one of the clearer peer-reviewed bridges from wearable sensing to population screening this week.
