Kyodo says Takaichi's government will also create a 'top gun' expert team and a rescue team and will work with overseas IT firms and advanced AI developers to keep vulnerability information current, after a run of personal-data leaks including a ransom attack on GMO Internet Group.

Why it matters

Japan's package responds to a spate of personal-data breaches rather than to AI risk as such, but it builds frontier AI into national cyber defence in two ways: using AI to detect weaknesses in computer systems and working with overseas IT companies and advanced AI developers to keep vulnerability information up to date. Nikkei reported this week that Tokyo wanted early access to undisclosed software flaws from US AI developers. It also follows October's PHP disclosures, which triggered millions of hacking attempts, according to CNA. Watch for how any data-sharing arrangement with US AI labs works and how the new expert teams are staffed.
