White House requires federally funded labs to buy DNA only from screened, certified suppliers

The National Policy for Nucleic Acid Synthesis Screening replaces self-attestation with verified screening of orders of 50 or more nucleotides and of benchtop synthesisers, and cites risks including uplift from superintelligence (SI); it covers federally funded research only.
Why it matters
Gene synthesis screening is one of the main safeguards against AI-assisted bioweapon development, and this policy replaces the 2024 framework's reliance on self-attestation with independent verification and NIST standards. It is the first US policy text to frame the risk explicitly around uplift from superintelligence, and it extends screening to benchtop synthesisers, which can work outside central providers. Its reach is limited to recipients of federal life-sciences funding; watch NIST's standards within 90 days, HHS's first supplier list within 160 days, and whether Congress extends screening to everyone else.
