Barbados and the UN will co-host a Special Summit on AI Safety in Bridgetown on 23 November
Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Secretary-General António Guterres will attend; the summit runs back-to-back with the UN's independent scientific panel on AI.
Why it matters
The UN says the summit will gather governments, AI companies, scientists and civil society to discuss where international cooperation can improve AI safety and preparedness, covering risk management, access, capacity and linguistic representation. It will not create global rules or direct the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, whose co-chairs asked the UN to convene experts and companies on safety. UN envoy Amandeep Singh Gill said few countries can test advanced AI systems or respond when something goes wrong.
