Why it matters

A coalition of the biggest AI infrastructure builders and leading environmental groups is trying to write shared national rules for data centres, after voters rejected data-centre measures in nearly every ballot test this week. The document reviewed by AFP says the talks cover energy and infrastructure, water, community engagement, economic value, transparency and implementation, and run until February 2027, so a framework will not arrive quickly. Meetings follow Chatham House rules. Watch whether the group publishes draft guidelines and whether governors and utilities engage with it.
