Anthropic Science Blog: AI should return ranges of scientific models, not one fit

Cover art for Anthropic Science Blog post on teaching AI to build scientific models
Anthropic

Guest essay by Macke, Gedon and Wahl (ELLIS Tübingen): LLM agents that write and revise simulators should return weighted populations of plausible models so shared features show what the data support.

Why it matters

Anthropic published the guest post on its Science Blog late on November 6, arguing that fitting a single equation can hide alternative mechanisms that fit the same measurements. The authors frame modeling as build–constrain–interpret loops, using Hodgkin–Huxley as the historical example, and urge agents to explore many code-level model structures. The piece is advocacy and method, not a new benchmark result. It lands beside Anthropic’s other November 6 science and engineering posts on agent memory “dreaming.” Watch whether labs ship agents that expose model ensembles by default.

Key facts

  • Guest post Nov 6 on Anthropic Science Blog
  • Authors: Macke, Gedon, Wahl (ELLIS Tübingen)
  • Argues for weighted model populations
  • Hodgkin–Huxley used as historical frame
  • Not a new benchmark release
