OpenAI hires former US Army secretary Dan Driscoll in a new national security role

The company told the Financial Times that Driscoll joins as senior counselor for national security modernization, focused on working with US allies on the responsible use of AI; OpenAI had not posted the hire on its own site.
Why it matters
The hire puts a former Pentagon service chief inside OpenAI as the US military tries to widen its use of AI for national security and cybersecurity. Driscoll stepped down as Army secretary after disagreements with defence secretary Pete Hegseth, according to the Financial Times as relayed by Ritzau. Earlier this year OpenAI expanded its work with the Defense Department after talks between Anthropic and Hegseth broke down.
