The New York Times and other publishers sue Brave over scraping content for AI companies
The complaints say Brave sold access to its scraped index to AI firms including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI and Cohere and let users bypass paywalls; Brave had not responded.
Why it matters
Publisher copyright cases have so far targeted AI labs directly; this one goes after a search index that the complaints say supplies real-time content to many labs at once. The publishers behind the New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel also object to Brave's paywall blocker feature. The Times says it repeatedly asked Brave to stop. Perplexity dismissed the suit in a statement to The Verge. Watch for Brave's response and whether the AI companies named face follow-on claims.
