Tencent calls Hy4 one of the strongest open-weight models available but says it still trails leading closed systems on research-level maths, long-horizon coding and advanced visual questions.

Why it matters

Hy4 is the first model in Tencent's line to understand images, and the company says it can analyse complex charts and do visual mathematical reasoning. It follows the text-only Hy4 preview released in August, and arrives as Chinese labs including DeepSeek, Z.ai and Alibaba compete on open-weight models. Tencent says Hy4 powers an update to its workplace AI tool WorkBuddy and was built with cyber and biosecurity in mind. Independent benchmark results and details of the published weights are the things to watch.
