AMD discloses it will pay about $2.9bn for AI inference chip startup Taalas, with $1.4bn conditional

A securities filing put a price on the cash-and-stock deal announced in August; it has not closed and still needs regulatory approval.
Why it matters
Taalas, founded in Toronto in August 2023 by former AMD executives, designs chips hard-wired for specific AI models rather than general-purpose processors, and its first chip targeted Meta's Llama family. The Globe and Mail calls the price one of the largest takeovers of a Canadian technology company, above the $2.75 billion Nasdaq paid for Verafin in 2020. Taalas had raised over $225 million, including a $169 million round in February. Watch which conditions govern the $1.4 billion contingent portion and whether regulators clear the deal.
