MissionOSBw, the open mission operating system at the core of Germany's CFSN uncrewed combat aircraft project, now belongs to the state rather than the contractor; the BAAINBw puts the project at more than €220m, while Reuters cites €580m from earlier reports.

Why it matters

In defence, prime contractors usually keep the software, interfaces and intellectual property of the systems they build, which locks governments into one supplier for upgrades. By handing over the source code, documentation and development kit, Helsing lets the German state add, swap or upgrade modules from other suppliers under a modular open-systems approach. The software is the core of the Combat Fighter System of Systems Nucleus, which includes two experimental uncrewed combat aircraft and ground stations. Watch whether other European programmes demand the same state ownership of autonomy software.
