FDA clears Neurotronics' AI sleep module that estimates sleep time from a pulse-oximeter signal
The Nihon Kohden company's software-only Sleep Analysis Module received 510(k) clearance; it is the firm's first FDA-cleared AI/ML sleep algorithm.
Why it matters
Home sleep apnea tests usually divide breathing events by total recording time because measuring actual sleep needs extra sensors such as EEG. The module instead estimates total sleep time from the photoplethysmography signal a pulse oximeter already records, which can give a more accurate apnea-hypopnea index without changing the patient setup. It will first run in Neurotronics' Polysmith software for studies recorded with its NomadAir home test. The details come from the company's announcement.
