OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra designed a working device in under a week and starts a vehicle-design project with Mazda

OpenAI says Astra produced the enclosure, circuit board and firmware without direct human edits, but still missed manufacturing tolerances, and that hardware-team token use is up 23-fold since February.
Why it matters
The post moves OpenAI's agent claims from software into physical product work: mechanical CAD, circuit-board layout, simulation and manufacturing drawings. OpenAI is candid that the Astra-designed device still needed several rounds of review because the model did not account for the manufacturer's limits. On its BenchCAD 2.0 test, a newer internal model scored 0.875 against 0.594 for GPT-6 Astra. Watch for results from the Mazda aerodynamics and crash-safety work, which OpenAI says it will share in the coming months.
