Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty plans to file a complaint with the Korea Fair Trade Commission on Thursday, saying FSD was sold for 9.043 million won although most Teslas in Korea cannot legally use it.

Why it matters

FSD can be used legally only on US-built Teslas, about 20% of those registered in South Korea, because those cars meet US safety standards recognised under a free trade agreement. Most Teslas sold in the country are made in China, and Tesla has sold more than 170,000 Shanghai-built cars there since 2023. A Korea Fair Trade Commission official said the agency opened a probe into Tesla's FSD advertising earlier this year. Tesla did not respond to requests for comment.

Key facts

  • FSD lump-sum price: 9.043 million won ($6,726)
  • About 20% of Teslas registered in Korea can legally use FSD
  • Over 170,000 Shanghai-built Teslas sold in Korea since 2023
  • The complaint is due to be filed on Thursday
